Mato Grosso do Sul is set to receive an investment of R$2 billion by 2030 for the installation of a green hydrogen plant, the result of a cooperation agreement between the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), the Brazilian Certification, Research and Innovation Network (RBCIP) and the company Green World Energy Hydrogen (GWE). The project will also train around 500 specialists, professors and engineers.

RBCIP, in partnership with GWE, recently completed a mission to China to monitor a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of a state-of-the-art electrolyzer, which will be used in the green hydrogen plant to be installed on the UFMS campus. It is estimated that this clean and sustainable energy source could generate revenues of R$150 billion in Brazil by 2050, with R$100 billion coming from exports of the commodity, according to the Green Hydrogen Opportunity in Brazil research.

Jaime Verruck, secretary of Semadesc (Secretariat of Environment, Development, Science, Technology and Innovation), highlights that “the UFMS initiative, with investments in research and extension for the production of clean and renewable energy, combined with the Green World Energy Hydrogen project, follow the strategic line of the State Government to promote the energy transition process in Mato Grosso do Sul, advocated by MS Renovável, aiming at MS Carbon Neutral”.

Verruck also mentioned the LaTES (Laboratory of Advanced Technologies in Energy and Sustainability) of the UFMS Physics Institute, made possible by the Carbon Neutral Call launched in 2022 by Semadesc and Fundec. LaTES will support UFMS researchers in studies related to LPG and green hydrogen.

The rector of UFMS, Marcelo Turine, and the president of Fundect, Marcio Pereira, participated in the inauguration.

Advanced training and research

The rector of UFMS, Marcelo Turine, and the president of Fundect, Marcio Pereira, participated in the inauguration of LaTES, which conducts research on green hydrogen. The green hydrogen plant to be installed on the UFMS campus is expected to be inaugurated in 2024. Its main objective is to explore different routes for the production of green hydrogen, including the use of groundwater and renewable energy sources. The partnership between UFMS and RBCIP foresees the involvement of professionals from different areas, such as engineering, chemistry, economics and environmental management, to ensure the technical, economic and environmental viability of the project.

The installation of the plant and the training of professionals reinforce Mato Grosso do Sul's commitment to sustainability and technological innovation, aligning with the goals of energy transition and carbon neutrality.
