Green hydrogen: a new source of wealth for Brazil
Green hydrogen (H2V) is seen as essential for the energy transition and a promising alternative for decarbonizing the economy. Experts and authorities highlight that Brazil has significant potential to become a global hub for this growing industry, taking advantage of its vast territorial size and renewable sources.
Recently, the CB Debate — Green Hydrogen: the Fuel of the Future addressed the challenges and opportunities of the sector in the country. The event, held by the Instituto Cultura em Movimento and supported by Correio Braziliense, was sponsored by Banco do Nordeste (BNB), Caixa Econômica Federal and the federal government, in addition to the support of the Federation of Industries of the Federal District (Fibra).
Since 2021, 131 large-scale projects have been announced, totaling investments of US$500 billion by 2030, with the Brazilian Northeast leading these investments. BNB president Paulo Câmara emphasized that projects are starting to come to fruition, especially in Ceará, with US$30 billion in corporate memoranda. "Economic and social development must go hand in hand with the sustainable agenda," Câmara highlighted.
Ricardo Cappelli, president of the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI), warned about the importance of not limiting ourselves to exporting commodities. "Our challenge is to finance a new cycle of industrialization in the country," he said. Jean Rodrigues Benevides, from Caixa Econômica, reinforced the need to consider natural limits to ensure sustainable growth.
Regulatory Support
The recent approval of the National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Policy establishes a legal framework for the sector, encouraging energy production with tax reductions and the issuance of certifications. During the debate, Congressman Fernando Monteiro (PP-PE) stated that the regulatory framework will provide clear guidance for investors, although challenges remain, especially regarding tax subsidies. João Paulo Rodrigues, from Neoenergia, highlighted the need for clarity on the incentives provided for in the law to promote the balanced development of the technology in Brazil.
Production and Sustainability
The green hydrogen market in Brazil presents great opportunities, especially in the Northeast, which has ideal conditions for the production of renewable energy. Aldemir Freire, from BNB, highlighted the importance of ensuring that the benefits of this new industry have a social impact on the region.
At the CB Debate, Luiz Piauhylino Filho, from the National Institute of Clean Energy (INEL), warned about the need for investments in infrastructure and specialized labor. He also pointed out the significant financial challenges, with high costs for hydrogen production and transmission infrastructure.
Marcelo Fiche, RBCIP’s green hydrogen project coordinator, highlighted the importance of research and development to overcome bottlenecks and cited international examples, such as Germany, where robust investments are driving innovation in the sector. Fiche stressed that Brazil needs effective public policies to advance in the green hydrogen market, taking advantage of its natural and strategic potential.
